What is Branding Photography?

And why is it so important?

Branding is more than just a logo, colours and fonts. Your visual identity is actually made up of lots of different elements, including photography and video! But what is brand photography, why is it important and how can you get some for your own business?

Brand photography is a suite of professional images that represent your business visually, and fit with your visual identity through the use of colours, tone, props, sets and more. These can include photos of you, your team, your products, your process, your space and other things that make your business unique. They are images that tell a story of who you are, what your business is and what your trying to sell!

You may have had a branded headshot taken before for LinkedIn, your website, or an online profile, and while a beautiful, professional headshot is important, it’s just one piece of the branding puzzle.

To make your business look it’s best, you’ll want a range of consistent, well-designed photos that will keep your business looking tip-top across all of your marketing material over time.

Social Media presence is nearly as important nowadays as a well functioning website. Did you know 82% of consumers trust a company more (and 77 % are more likely to buy from a company) if the founder uses social media.

This isn’t to say that these photos are just for your social media profiles, or that they should all include you, but to point out that people want to connect with other people, relate to others and see the face behind the company.

I know that having photos taken of yourself can be so daunting! I took the images in this blog with a girlfriend of mine (who isn't a photographer) and it was hard! I had to set up the tripod and camera exactly where I wanted it, set the exposure, aperture and focal point, and then get her to just click away while I changed my poses, expressions and positions.

But it won't be that hard for you! I have over 13 years experience in portrait photography, and posing people is my forte! We of course don't want all your photos posed, but you'd be amazed how hard it is to get an organic candid photo, without first setting the environment.

But branding photography is not just about photos of you. It's about the environment you work in, the products or services you sell and the overall energy of your business. It's about telling you story!

Look at my photos for example. They are ok; I've lit them ok, placed the camera in the right position and got a few different angles and expressions; but they don't really tell MY STORY! They show you photos of me and give me good content for my website, instagram and this Blog, but realistically, I want images that show me behind the scenes. Images that show me working with my clients, photographing my clients, helping them with wardrobe styling and editing their photos.

But thats to come. For now, I simply needed to make a start. See, I'm on a journey too and my brand is going to develop and change as I do, and I'm ok with that. But on that journey I at least want the images to be cohesive and consistent.

When you and/or your team can be seen throughout your marketing in a context that represents your business, potential clients will be able to see who they would be working with, get a glimpse into the process, and imagine themselves being a part of that experience. Photos with humans in them take your products and services from seeming unattainable, conceptual or hypothetical, and bring them into reality as something tangible, achievable and desirable.
